Set net fishing is a slower form of fishing. There are no hydraulics or machinery. Anchors, buoys, running lines, and nets are set manually. The nets are static. Fish don’t take as much of a beating in the process. All fish are picked out of the net by hand.
Salmon spawn in rivers. We fish near the mouths of rivers in Viekoda Bay for a limited number of weeks. The fishing we do is targeted. The “gillnet” is constructed to trap the fish by the gills as they try to pass through. The dimensions of the webbing are for salmon that are mature enough to harvest. Small fish pass through. Larger fish have to swim around.
We catch less fish (generally) than larger boats using hydraulics that fish open water. However, the quality tends to be superior. Less bruising of fillets, etc.
